Retirement compensation arrangements

A retirement compensation arrangement provides for the accumulation of retirement money in trust in order to provide members with a pension that exceeds the pension limits prescribed by the Income Tax Act. The retirement compensation arrangements differ from registered plans in that each contribution is subject to a 50% withholding tax that will be paid into a refundable tax account maintained with the Canada Revenue Agency. However, this tax will be returned to the trust when the retirement arrangement begins to pay pensions to participants.

For participants of a retirement compensation arrangement, benefits are only taxable when paid to them.

Vias Ltd. offers the services of setting up and registering retirement compensation arrangements, as well as the actuarial and administrative services of the arrangement. Vias Ltd. therefore determines the allowable contribution and completes the various declarations required each year by the tax authorities.
